H2CAST Etzel as "Best Practise" in BDEW publication "RoadmapGas 2.0 - Industrie und künftige Energieversorgung"

The BDEW (Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industries), one of the leading trade associations in Germany, has published "RoadmapGas 2.0 - Industrie und künftige Energieversorgung" and on its platform "gemeinsamklimaneutral" and has included the innovative hydrogen project #H2CAST Etzel, alongside other projects in Germany, as a #BestPractice in the field of #Storage & Transport!

The platform aims to demonstrate, using existing projects, that much of what is happening in the field of ‘New Gases’ is already a reality or is currently becoming one.

Excerpt from the article: “At the Etzel site in Lower Saxony, the H2CAST Etzel project is testing the conversion of existing salt cavern and storage infrastructure for hydrogen.

The focus is not primarily on a storage operation that is already market-ready, but on the technical and infrastructural transformation pathway: Existing caverns, above-ground facilities and pipeline infrastructure are to be further developed so that they can be used for large-scale hydrogen storage in the future.

In doing so, the project addresses a key challenge of the hydrogen ramp-up: how existing natural gas and oil infrastructure can be transitioned into a future hydrogen economy.”

“What makes H2CAST special is the innovative approach of being able to control the working gas volume (AGV) in the project caverns via the brine level by injecting and withdrawing brine; this is our unique selling point,” says Carsten Reekers, Head of Cavern Operations and Head of the H2CAST R&D project at STORAG ETZEL. “We want to make the Etzel site in Lower Saxony ‘H2-ready’, i.e. prepare it for the foreseeable ramp-up of the hydrogen economy.” 🔋

About H2CAST:

In the H2CAST project, the consortium partners – comprising medium-sized companies, research institutions, the Dutch state-owned Gasunie and STORAG ETZEL – are driving forward the storage project with an investment of around 50 million euros.
