Technical article by project partner Gasunie: Large-scale hydrogen storage in salt caverns

In Etzel, Lower Saxony, work is underway on a large-scale underground hydrogen storage project using salt caverns, known as the SpHyGer project.

A climate-neutral energy supply requires more than just the generation of renewable energy. At least as important is the ability to store energy when it is readily available and to make it available when demand rises.

Through the HyStock project in the Netherlands and the SpHyGER project in Germany (H2CAST), Gasunie is working on a key component of the future energy system in north-western Europe: a reliable hydrogen infrastructure that links production, transport and use.
